After cutting their
teeth
on short-
range cross-Channel
operations
during
the
late summer/ early
autumn of
1942,
the pioneer
heavy
bomber
groups
of the Eighth
Air
Force began
to venture
further afield.
Their
next
targets included the
German navy's U·Boat pens along
the
French
Atlantic
coast.
On 23
November 1942,
for the
fifth
time
in
the space of a
fortnight,
elements of the embryonic
'Mighty
Eighth' hit St
Nazaire. Solid
undercast prevented
all
but nine
B-17Fs of the 91st and
306th
Bomb
Groups
from reaching
their
objective. Those that made
it
to
the
target were met
by
a frightening
new
tactic
on the part of
the
Luftwaffe's
fighter defences
-
frontal
attack!
The originator
of the head-on
assault,
Hauptmann Egon Mayer
(recently-appointed
Gruppen-
kommandeur
of
111./JG 2)
led
his
Fw
190s
through the 8-17 formation
in
the most successful pass yet
carried out against
the
still relatively
inexperienced heavy
bomber
crews.
Four
Flying
Fortresses were claimed
destroyed, including
one by Mayer
himself, for the loss of a single
Focke-Wulf
fighter.
In
this specially-commissioned
artwork by
Jim Laurier, Mayer's
'White
Double
Chevron', with
his
port wingman in close attendance, is
seen
scything
through
the
leading
section of B-17s.
Egon Mayer
would
add 24 more USAAF
'
heavies' to his
score,
which made him
the
foremost
Viermot-Experte
of the
Luftwaffe
at
the time of his
death
in action
against P-47s in
March 1944
