TAMIYA’S 1:48 LOCKHEED
P-38F/G LIGHTNING

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning is an iconic US fighter from
the Second World War. Its twin Allison V12 engines were
mounted in booms to free-up the nose so it could house
a fearsome array of four M2 Browning machine guns and
a 20mm cannon. The twin-boom airframe became a sight
feared by enemies wherever it served, with good reason.
In 2019, after several years of painstaking research,
Tamiya released an all-new kit of this sleek aircraft and it
has taken its place proudly in the 1:48 Aircraft Series as
No.120 in the range.
In this new ‘How To Build’ book, Tamiya Model
Magazine’s Editor, Marcus Nicholls, presents no less
than four built-up examples of Tamiya’s fantastic model;
one Lightning each from Brett Green and Spencer
Pollard, plus two from Marcus Nicholls.
The second of Marcus’s models incorporates resin and
photo-etched super-detail sets from Eduard, showing
how they can be used within the build to take the detail
to an even higher level. New photos of the other models
show how Brett Green and Spencer Pollard built and
painted the models in their own styles.

Soviet Tank Destroyer SU-100
n MMI Issue 167 my colleague Andy King showed
us a full build review of the Zvezda 1:35 SU-85.
He concluded that it was an enjoyable build and
made into a decent enough model. Following on
from that kit, Zvezda has naturally followed it up
with the SU-100.
Coming in Zvezda’s familiar cardboard box
within a slipcase, we have approximately 330 parts
moulded in olive green for the tank parts, metallic
black for the tracks and a clear sprue for the
periscopes. Also included is a length of twine for
the towropes and nylon mesh for the engine grille.
All parts are flash free with excellent definition and
there are no sink marks that I can find. The only
flaw I have found in opening the box is the same as
Andy found is his SU-85 in that the upper hull roof
has bowed and been deformed. This may fix itself
when we add the superstructure rear plate part A18
and the glacis part A24, but a better solution would
be if Zvezda could either pack the sprues better or
mould some strengthening to the roof. It falls into
the category of annoying, but fixable. Markings are
provided for two vehicles, both late war Soviet ones,
so if you want to do a post war Egyptian or other
country of service you will need to go aftermarket.
The instructions come in 19 steps with several sub-
assemblies included. It is all clearly drawn and very
Tamiya-ish in style.
Construction commences with the lower hull
which comes as separate parts. Test-fit carefully
but it does line up. The suspension springs go
into separate housings and the suspension arms
are fixed in place. It isn’t designed to have a
positionable suspension so be prepared for some
work if you want it on anything but a flat surface.
Tracks come as link & length and there are some
knock-out pin parts on the inner surfaces that will
need removing. A jig is provided but you will need
to snip off some of the runner to make it work – see
Andy’s full build review for this.
The upper hull comes a one-piece shell to which
the front & rear plates are added. The SU-100 had
a circular base added for the cupola and Zvezda
show this well. A separate curved piece is provided
to go around the cupola base which means that
all the lovely weld detail is present. Details such
as the hatch hinges are separate pieces and the
periscopes are moulded in clear plastic. Notable is
the very fine weld detail present around this model.
All hatch interiors are fully detailed and can be
shown open or closed but there is nothing provided
for the kit’s interior to fill the void. I recommend a
pair of very sharp scissors for cutting the mesh for
the rear engine screen. The recess it goes into is
very positive but this mesh is tough and needs care
to cut.
A couple of nice touches I like are, firstly, the
way that the track grousers on the fenders have
been molded. There is lower half and then a top half
which contains the finely replicated strap. Secondly,
the tow cables come in two parts which allows for a
deep recess for the string to be attached to. It saves
you drilling out a hole anyway.
Zvezda is one of those companies that continues
to amaze me. The standard of what they are doing
is up there with the best and quality of the parts &
moulding is second to none. It would be nice if there
could be some etch in the box, but this isn’t a deal
breaker. This kit is oozing detail and being priced at
around £20 it gives you ample scope to add the DEF
Model PE & barrel sets and still
have change compared with a
current Far Eastern mega-kit.
It is not a beginner’s kit, but it
will suit an intermediate modeller
and provide great super-detailing
scope to turn it into a true
masterpiece.
This one comes highly
recommended.
