- r I have your letter of the 10th Instant quoting memorandum,
from Assistant Attorney General Luhring in reference to Investigation'/
^ of the Hale -3am sey cases and which concerns the investigative necessi-
ties. In connection wi th these cases* 1 ' i* •«■

Will state in this connection that I believe that 1 can he
able to handle this investigation with the present force of agents that
I have. Agents Franlc S. Smith, John R. Burger, and j. Alex street >
speoially assigned to the Hal e-Ramsey case, have been on annual leaves
of absence since this case went to the Jury in the latter part of V
August. I have recalled all of these agents to the Oklahoma City of-
fice and have had them take up the investigation as outlined in 2»r«
Luhring's memorandum quoted in your letter of September 10th, as well
fas the memorandum by him passed to me with o*. Nathan's letter of
August 31st. .. . . . - .*.*

Since receiving your telegram, ilay l?th, stating ti^at
was impossible to furnish additional agents in view of the
i the service in connection with this investigation, I have been hand-
selling it with the agents specially assigned to the case, Smith, 3urg>r,
janA Street, who were assisted by one of the agents regularly assigned
to the office - J. V. iturphy. I have been able to handle these cases
with the agents especially assigned to them due to the fact that i ar-
. ranged with the Osage Indian Agency at pawhuska to have two to five of
l/ —the i r Ind i an Agent s assist me in these cases. The se m& i sn on t s hav«.

investigations have been expeditiously handled in this manner. The
Indian Agents-are well known in the territory covered in theso investll^-v
gatlons and are aanewhat of the same type of the agents handling th© 1 '>&>’-
Osage cases, and have given me a great deal of assistance. Also, I *

I have no doubt that I can bring about the same arr^gejneht*
above described in continuing this investigation and can cover fully ' ~

regard at all times. ■

\ " : K i am behind some with the 'investigations in the Oklehc-is*^,.

territory. This is evidently due to the fact of the agents taking their
annual leaves during the summer months, which is ordinarily the dull
period for the Bureau. However, the work in this locality did not seem
to be any lighter during these months than any other period* I t hin k
with the present force, however, that I can cover any case of emergency.,
arai hope to be able to handle the work- with my present force. .

Trusting that the above explanation is to your satisfaction.
