ELCOME to our 40th
anniversary issue.
How do you choose the
best highlights from 40 years
of dance writing? It’s impossible,
especially when having to squeeze
them all into a single article with a
deadline looming. Where to start?
The archives of
Dance Australia
contain so much history – dancers,
companies, choreographers,
teachers, schools – myriad artists
involved with dance have come and
gone during the 227 issues that have
been printed. The archives record
not just the artists but attitudes and
ideologies too, changes in politics
and governments, shifts in
Australia’s cultural landscape.
A
range of publishing
technologies have come and gone as
well. The first issues of
Dance
Australia
were quarterly,
laid out by hand with
rollers and hot wax, and
stored in special folders
with
Dance Australia
livery.
I have filing draws of beautiful black
and white photos and another drawer
loaded with CDs, CD ROMs and
slides (or “trannies”, as they were
somewhat innocently called).
Cupboards that used to be stuffed with “hard copy” of articles and casette tapes of
interviews have been emptied. Everything is digital now.
Rather than attempt the Herculean task of going back through all the issues to the
beginning, and as we have already run other anniversary issues acknowledging other
milestone anniversaries, I decided to concentrate instead on the last decade. Even then,
what to choose? I confess my methodology was totally random – a sort of “pin the tale on
the donkey” attack – eyes closed, open an issue, pick whichever article my eyes landed on.
The decisions were still difficult, even with this ad hoc approach. I had to be ruthless.
But though it was painful to have leave out so many fascinating stories, I can take pleasure
in the fact that what has made the cut is equally fascinating. I hope you agree with me.
