The diagnostics of the
C-CROSSER
Remote
codable
- 2WD: front-wheel drive,
- 4WD: four-wheel drive,
- Lock: four-wheel drive with special control
laws for the rear drivetrain.
The electronic clutch of the rear axle is
controlled by an ECU that transfers torque
to the rear axle in 4WD or Lock mode,
when the front wheels loses grip. A loss of
grip is detected by the wheel sensors
of the ABS system.
The AWD sensor receives the data sent by
the CAN and modulates a current between
0 A and 3 A according to the engine torque
to be applied to the rear wheels.
For diagnostics purposes, this ECU is located
under the dashboard, next to the clutch
pedal.
Diagnostics can be used to view faults,
settings measurements and actuator tests.
An actuator test is used to override the
transmission of torque to the rear wheels
in order to check the condition of the
electronic clutch.

The C-CROSSER in brief
The diesel version of C-Crosser will arrive in
the network in July 2007. It is the very first
4x4 Citroën. The model has been developed
in partnership with Mitsubishi and is based
on the Outlander.
diagnostics functions are centralised in the
ETACS.
This is the reason why any requests relating
to these ECUs that are made in the menus of
the diagnostics tool cause the tool to inter-
rogate the ETACS using specific routines.

The master ECU: ETACS
ETACS is the equivalent of the BSI ECU. It
centralises certain functions and acts as the
gateway between the vehicle's diagnostics
connector and the other networks.
Note that the ETACS does not contain a
fault log (JDD).

Some special features
of C-CROSSER
A new engine
C-Crosser is fitted with the new 157 hp
DW12M 2.2-litre HDi, which is an evolution
of the DW12B. The DW12M powerplant
features a single variable-geometry turbo
controlled by an electric actuator with
position repeat.
The DW12M is the first engine to be fitted
with a solenoid used to by-pass the EGR
exchanger, which is why the new parameter
"Position set point for EGR cooler by-pass"
has been introduced .
Note:
since the air conditioning pressure
sensor is not connected to the injector ECU,
the measurement of this parameter is produ-
ced by information from the air conditioning
ECU.
Tip:
if the vehicle runs out of fuel, the
following sequence must be completed 3
times:
"switch on the ignition - wait 15
seconds - switch off the ignition",
so that
the boost pump in the tank fills the low-
pressure circuit. After these three sequences,
switch on the starter.
• Electronic architecture
The general architecture is based on three
networks that interconnect the numerous
ECUs. Two CANs and one LIN are present
on the vehicle.
• Remote ECUs
For the diagnostics tool, the door and sun
roof module ECUs present on the LIN

Note that when remote coding, the other
ECUs are self-programmed by the ETACS.
The ETACS updates the other ECUs on
the network using the information that it
contains.
• The steering wheel angle sensor
On C-Crosser, the steering angle sensor is
an ECU in its own right. It has its own self-
diagnostics function.
It can be found in the "Active, passive safety"
menu in the diagnostics tool.
It is calibrated in this ECU rather than in the
ESP, which is the case in other vehicles.
• A unique ECU:
the rear axle electronic clutch
C-Crosser is usually driven by the two front
wheels. However, a selector switch on the
central console can be used to change the
drive mode when stationary or when on the
move. There are three modes:
• Xenon headlights
Xenon headlights are available as an option.
The headlight settings are controlled by a
specific ECU.
This ECU cannot be accessed in the general
test. It can be found in one of the Handset
menus on the "headlight level correction"
tab.
Only "Read fault" is available.
The settings are applied mechanically.
The faults are not read directly in the
diagnostics tool in the shape of fault codes
that are displayed on the screen, which is
the case for most PSA ECUs, but in the shape
of pictograms displayed on the vehicle's
handset (see photo).
Start a diagnostics session for this ECU using
the tool, follow the instructions to identify
the fault code on the handset, note the code
and check that it matches the associated
fault.
General comment:
The notion of momentary and
permanent faults and the associated
contexts remain identical to those used
in the Brand's other vehicles.

CITROËN C4 SEDAN FLEX FUEL
A Flex Fuel version of C4 SEDAN fitted with
the 1.6-litre petrol powerplant (TU5JP4) is
available in Brazil.
The ME7.4.9 BOSCH engine control ECU is
used for this type of injection.
Flex Fuel engines can work with variable
proportions of gasoline / ethanol mixes.
The proportion of alcohol can vary from 22%
(E22) to 100% (E100) for this vehicle.

to switch to the main gasoline/ethanol tank,
once the engine is hot.
In the diagnostics tool, specific dynamic Flex
Fuel settings (for vehicles in Brazil) have
been added to the ‘’Settings measurements /
ME7.4.9 Flex Fuel" menu:
- Status of the cold start relay (active or
inactive, depending on the ECU settings).
- Percentage of alcohol present in the mix in
the main tank.
- Alcohol meter in litres that represents the
total volume of ethanol consumed by the
engine.
Note:
there are no special fault codes for
this vehicle.
USE:
the engine can run only gasoline
only in the main tank.

Changes to the
diagnostics trees
Structure of the
symptom tree
The guided method now converges towards
one or more components (see CD-ROM
N°37 magazine).
This is why the symptom trees include a list
of the components of the ECU incriminated
by the guided method.
Example 1:

differentiator.
The network has sent us a number
of comments on the structure of the
diagnostics trees. These comments will
soon be integrated and deployed in your
diagnostics tools.
This approach, which is different from the
preceding method, has been introduced on
CD-ROM N° 38 for all of the diagnostics
trees of the
air conditioning function of
C4 Picasso.
The aim is to improve the quality and the
effectiveness of the diagnostics trees and to
make the diagnostics trees easier to use.
The diagnostics trees now start with a cell
indicating the possible origins of the fault and
the components that can cause the fault to
appear.
Example 2:
wiring diagram for the connec-
tion of several differentiators.
According to this diagram, the differentiator
4267-T must be connected to the green
63-channel connector on the automatic
terminal unit and the differentiator 4231-T
to the white 63-channel connector on the
automatic terminal unit.
Advanced BSI
Simply validate the component(s) in the list
indicated by the guided method to access
the corresponding check tree.
The details of the checks are described in the
rest of the diagnostics tree.
From June 2007, "advanced" BSIs will be
installed in C4 Picasso to replace the
"cross-range"
units.
Ultimately, all full CAN vehicles will be
fitted with these new BSIs.
Caution: the "advanced "BSIs" must not
be installed in place of "cross-range"
BSIs and vice versa. This change does
not impact diagnostics.
In order to make it easier to identify
the BSI installed in the vehicle, from
CD-ROM N°38 onwards the tool will
display an additional line entitled "BSI
type" in the "Identification" screen.
Installing
differentiators
When several differentiators are connected
to the automatic terminal unit of the diagnos-
tics tool, the tool displays a wiring diagram to
make it easier to make the connections.
Structure
of the fault tree
The structure of the trees is unified.
Before each check, the following are shown:
• the equipment need to complete the tree,
• an indication of the time taken to complete
the tree.
Wherever possible, the checks follow this
sequence:
• preliminary checks,
• diagnostics checks,
• mechanical checks,
• electric checks.
