JOINT
RESOLUTION
To
Whereas
establish
a
Lincoln
Sesquicentennial
Commission.
fiftieth
the
year
1959
marks
the
one
hundred
and
anni-
versary
of
the
birth
of
Abraham
Lincoln
on
February
12.
1809;
and
Whereas
Abraham
Lincoln
served
the
United
States;
and
as
the
sixteenth
President
of
Whereas
his
life
and
ideals
played
an
important
part
in
the
its
history
of
the
United
States
during
a
critical
period
of
history;
and
spoken
and
written
words
and
his
philosophy
to
of
Whereas
his
government
have
continued
have
influence
;
in
our
Govern-
ment
and
in
our
daily
way
of
life
and

the

observed
with
appropriate
ceremonies
the
one
hundredth
anniversary
of
the
birth
of
Abraham
Lincoln

the
interest
in,
and
respect
for,
Abraham
Lincoln
is
demonstrated
by
over
one
million
eight
hundred
and
thousand
people
from
Lincoln
all
fifty
parts
of
the
Nation
visiting
the

Memorial
in
Washington,
District

Columbia,
during
the
year
1956,
making
in
the
world;
the
most
visited
memorial

for

Commission
shall
give
due
consideration
to
any
similar

related
plans
advanced
by
State,
civic,

hereditary,
and
historical
bodies,

may
desig-
nate
special
committees
with
representation
from
the
above-

mentioned
bodies
to
plan
and
conduct
specific
ceremonies.

Commission
may
give
award
of
suitable
recognition
such
as
the
medals
and
certificates
or
by
other
appropriate
means
to
persons
and
organizations
for
outstanding
accom-
plishments
in
preserving
the
writings
and
ideals
of
Abraham
life.

or
agencies
for
their
advice
and
assistance
in
carrying

purposes

resolution.

manuscripts,
miscellaneous
printed
matter,
to

memorabilia,
relics
and
other
materials
relating
Abraham
Lincoln
and
donated
to
the
Commission
may
be
deposited
for

permanent
preservation
in
a
National,
State,
or
local
library

museum
or
be
otherwise
disposed
of
by
the
Commission
in

consultation
.with
the
Librarian
of
Congress
or
the
Secretary
of
the
Smithsonian
Institution.

Commission,
to
such
extent
as
to
the

finds

necessary,
may,
without
regard

procedures

procure
supplies,
services,
and
property
and
make
