from Cambridge University

1968
and worked as a
journalist with the

Times.
He edited
Military
Illustrated
for a number
of years, and is now
established as a full-time
writer. Bruce's definitive
Encyclopaedia
of
the
German Army
was even
translated and published
in German.
JEFFREY BURN is a
distinguished artist who has
worked on several Osprey
publications over the years,
including Men-At-Arms

is also
a keen re-enactor, and lives
in the Scottish Borders.

The Waffen-SS was a unique phenomenon in mili­
tary history, and comparisons with other famous
bodies of fighting men such as the Praetorian
Guard of the Caesars which is most commonly
cited fall apart on close examination. The Waffen­
SS was one of the end products of an ailing and
disillusioned society at odds with itself and the world.
That society itself was born of defeat i n the Great
War and the horrendous effects of the Depression; it
was a society which, while paying lip service to
democracy, really felt it needed and wanted strong
leadership. What it got was Adolf Hitler and the
N SDAP the National Socialist German Workers'
Party.
The key words in the Party's name were 'Na­
tional' and 'German', and from the moment the
N SDAP was elected to power and Hitler appointed
