For This Edition Of Top Of The Popsicles, The
Spotlight Falls Upon British Representation
On The Popsicle Music Roster. It’s
The…SWINGING BLUE JEANS.
Singled out for the ‘Top Of The Popsicle’s’ treatment this time around are Liverpool’s finest those
Swinging Blue Jeans. Brilliant though they are, the songs featured in Lemon Popsicle movies are mainly
from American artists so it’s good to know that the UK’s Swinging Blue Jeans are good enough to be
chosen for inclusion on the soundtrack. These fine exponents of the B.B.C. (that’s the British Beat
Combo!) have their turn for their five minutes of Popsicle fame in the final Popsicle film ‘The Party
Goes On’ with the classic ‘Hippy Hippy Shake’. And speaking of the B.B.C. the Swinging Blue Jeans
were no strangers to the ‘Top Of The Pops’ studio...but more about that later. So let’s take a look at the
life and times of the Swinging Blue Jeans.
The Blue Genes (as they were originally known) were formed as a semi - pro band in 1959, eventually
changing their name to the Swinging Blue Jeans (I couldn’t find out why!) and turning professional in
1962. Following a number of successful resident engagements at such famous Liverpool clubs as the
Mardi Gras and The Cavern, the Swinging Blue Jeans were offered resident seasons at the Star Club in
Hamburg alongside such Liverpool groups as The Beatles, Gerry and the Pacemakers, The Searchers,
and Merseybeats. 1963 became their ‘break through’ year as they blasted their way into the charts with
'Hippy Hippy Shake', which resulted them appearing on the very first show of the long running BBC
Television series 'Top Of The Pops'. Many more appearances under the watchful eye of Sir James Saville
were to follow. Due to the incredible international success of 'Hippy Hippy Shake' the Swinging Blue
Jeans were featured on every major pop TV show in Great Britain, Scandinavia and Europe, they also
featured in no less than 3 feature films. Several hit singles followed...'Good Golly Miss Molly', 'You're
No Good' (my personal favourite); 'Don't Make Me Over' and 'It's Too Late Now' were all chart
successes. Mixed in with the hit singles were two hit albums, 'Blue Jeans A Swinging' and 'Swinging Blue
Jeans At The Cascade'.
You may be surprised to know that the Blue Jeans are still swinging! They are still one of the most
popular of the authentic 60's band their annual tour commitments take in such diverse countries as
Germany, Australia, Sweden, Spain, Norway, New Zealand, Denmark, United Arab Emirates, Holland,
Ireland, Poland, Canada, the USA, and of course Great Britain. Up until recently they used to still feature
two the founder members in Ray Ennis and Les Braid. Sadly, however Les passed away on July 31
st
2005.
They often used to look back and think themselves lucky to have been involved in a Liverpool explosion
of popular music that played such a vital part in the exciting era now fondly referred to all who lived
through it as...the 'Swinging Sixties'! All the still touring members of the Swinging Blue Jeans hail from
Liverpool, they were raised on the excitement of rock 'n' roll and the Swinging Sixties...and Popsicle
Magazine hopes that they keep on swinging’ for many, many more years to come!

TOP TEN SWINGING BLUE JEANS POPTASTIC FACTS!
1. The Band had their own Tuesday Night Guest Spot at the Famous
Cavern Club. Guess who one of their guests were...the Beatles!
2. While 'Hippy Hippy Shake' was riding high in the charts, the Swinging
Blue Jeans made a cameo guest appearance in the Christmas edition of
the highly popular Liverpool based BBC television series 'Z Cars'.
3. After appearing in ‘Z Cars’ they were arrested near Nottingham.
Dressed in their trademark denim there were mistaken for prison
escapees!
4. So successful was the first appearance by the Swinging Blue Jeans on
the initial Top of the Pops show, that the BBC rebooked them for a
second appearance...25 years later.
5. Actress Sue Johnson of 'Brookside’ and ‘The Royal Family' fame,
bought Chan Romero's version of 'Hippy Hippy Shake' at Brian Epstein's
NEMS record store so that singer Ray Ennis could learn the correct lyrics.
6. They were the only band that Cilla Black never sung with when she
worked at the Cavern.
7. A lucky tip off during a tour of Czechoslovakia allowed the Blue Jeans
to escape the Russian invasion with just 12 hours to spare!
8. At times, the Blue Jeans still have trouble about wearing jeans in clubs
even though they're appearing there and wear jeans on stage!
9. Bob Wooler, the DJ at Liverpool's legendary Cavern Club excluded the
Jeans from the 'Mersey Beat' poll of 1961, suggesting that "they were
beyond comparison and in a class of their own"!
