Popsicle Scene
Welcome to a very special edition of Popsicle Fanzine, an issue
devoted entirely to Eskimo Limon legend Zachi Noy, star of every
Lemon Popsicle film, spin-off and remake every made!!
We know him as Huey, to German fans he's Johnny and Israeli fans
shout 'Yudale, Yudale' after him, but fans the world over all agree
that Lemon Popsicle just wouldn't be the same without him!
As Zachi celebrates his 60th birthday we take this opportunity to
pay tribute to the great man and celebrate his wonderful career.
From getting chased in his underwear, falling in the pool, dancing
the Tequila, to using one of his great one-liners on the chicks, Huey
has made us laugh, cry and laugh again so many times over the
years.
We take a closer look at Zachi's career and spotlight some of
Huey's most memorable Lemon-tinted moments. And Andrew Hunt
also offers us a Huey inspired Top of the Popsicle's and a poem
dedicated to Mr Popsicle!

Die Unglaublichen Abenteuer
des Zachi Noy
As Zachi Noy celebrates his 60
th
birthday, his acting career is approaching the
40-year mark. Popsicle fanzine couldn’t let this occasion pass without taking a
closer look at die unglaublichen abenteuer des Zachi Noy (the unbelievable
adventures of Zachi Noy).
He started way back in 1975, starring alongside Melanie Griffith in
Ha Gan
(The Garden
)
. Zachi’s character is called ‘Rami’ and Melanie Griffith plays a
young girl in a story about the struggle of a fruit garden owner against a group
of capitalists who are intent on destroying it.
It has got to be a real ‘feather in the cap’ moment starring alongside a screen
legend at such an early age, something to tell the grandchildren about! And,
although the young Melanie has since starred in many big screen productions,
surely none could have matched the honour of appearing alongside the
legendary Zachi Noy! And, as we all know, Zachi was destined for greater
things!
Zachi followed up his spell in the garden with his second role, the 1977 Israeli
film Hamesh Ma’ot Elef Shahor (Half a Million Back). This was a gangster film
set in Israel, when two comedians borrow half a million to stage a musical. But
they borrow the money from an entrepreneur who launders Mafia money
through his night-club. Needless to say, the show is a flop, the Mafia want
their money back and so the two funny guys have to go on the run.
This film also features one of Zachi’s future Popsicle co-stars – Joseph Shiloah
– who played Sargent Ramirez in Private Popsicle and was on board the ship
Orion as purser Georgy in Up Your Anchor.

Zachi Noy was born on 8th July, 1953. He started his acting career in 1975 in
the film "The Garden", which also starred Melanie Griffith. In 1979 he starred
in the first 'Lemon Popsicle' movie as Huey.
His latest movie is the horror "Cross Club - The Legend Of The Living Dead"
(1999) which also starred Sibylle Rauch, with whom he had previously worked
in several of the Popsicle movies.
He is currently portraying a lawyer in a very successful Israeli TV series,
"Ramat Aviv Gimel" . Zachi also starred as the owner of 'Glida Montana'
restaurant in the latest Lemon Popsicle movie, "Lemon Popsicle - The Party
Goes On" based on the same characters but with different actors.

Zachi followed this up a year later with ‘
Shraga Hakatan’
(Little Man) but then,
in 1978, along came
Lemon Popsicle
and nothing was ever going to be the
same again for the young Israeli actor. Zachi was to shoot to overnight
stardom in Israel for his role in Boaz Davidson’s iconic story of his own
teenage life in Israel. Zachi starred alongside Yiftach Katzur and Jonathan
Sagall as funnyman Yudale (pronounced Yoo-da-ley).
“And then on the streets, all this craziness began like ‘YUDALE, YUDALE’,
that it was like it was Zabotinzky and Begin [former prime ministers of Israel],
there was also now YUDALE!” remarked Zachi at the recent reunion with his
former Popsicle co-stars.
Yudale of course is better known as Johnny in Germany and Huey in Britain.
Lemon Popsicle featured one or two sex scenes and more than a few shots of
Huey in his underwear, something that didn’t go down too well with Zachi, “I
think that the dosage of my butt in the film was exaggerated and they should
have shown my face instead of my butt all the time!”
Zachi was now a household name in Israel and his career was now also
taking off in Germany. Soon after Zachi’s Popsicle debut came the German
erotic teen comedy
Popcorn und Himbeereis
(Popcorn and Ice-Cream). Zachi
stars as Johnny (not surprising considering his huge success with the same
name in Eis m Stiel) and the film features a 70’s disco soundtrack.
This is where the German Eis Am Stiel connections start to creep in as Zachi
stars alongside future Popsicle co-stars Bea Fiedler (Eva in Private Popsicle,
the dental assistant in Baby Love and the Countess in Up Your Anchor) and a
film debut for Dolly Dollar (Frieda in Baby Love).
It was back to Israel in 1979 for Zachi’s next two films - Imi Hageneralit (My
Mother the General) and more Popsicle capers in
Going Steady
, which is
regarded by many as the best film in the Popsicle series.
Huey serves up plenty more classic comedy scenes – most notably his
hilarious attempts to dance the Tequila – but we also get to see the serious
side to Zachi’s acting. Who could ever forget the look on Huey’s face when
Bobby tells a packed Montana that his best friend Benji has slept with his
girlfriend Martha?
And there is not a dry eye in the house
when, to the soulful tune of Santo and
Johnny’s Sleepwalk, Benji tries to console
a tearful Huey.
Then Zachi is back off to Germany again
as he joins Popsicle producer Menahem
Golan in the 1979 film
