What happens when a plane is no longer airworthy? Some air forces
have chosen to organize giant cemeteries in places like the Arizona
desert where dry heat, low humidity, and little rain make it possible
to avoid corrosion much longer than elsewhere. After all, airplanes are
expensive to build and maintain, and even at the end of their active
lives they can be exploited or even updated. Far away from Arizona,
there are cemeteries of airplanes littered with old Soviet army aircraft
in Russia. It should be noted that in this case they will never be able to
function again. Bases like Vozdvizhenka, almost 100 kilometres north
of the city of Vladivostok, ceased to make sense after the end of the Cold War. The huge supersonic
bombers where simply abandoned in place. They have been subjected to the constant punishment of
low temperatures, snow, and winds ever since.
On other occasions, the abandonment of an airplane is caused by an accident. Only a few years ago
a Curtiss P-40D Kittyhawk was discovered in the middle of the Sahara Desert in an excellent state of
conservation. So well in fact that the Egyptian army was forced to remove the ammunition from the
machine guns in order to avoid any mishap among the curious locals.
Another famous accident during World War II involved a military plane, the B-24 bomber “Lady Be
Good”, and a quaint crew of geologists. When the aircraft was found, it was certain that the crew had
survived by parachuting. Exhausted and hungry, they would die one by one. The dramatic thing about
the story is that the plane had been split in half, but the entire cargo remained intact. In it were jerry
cans of water, food, and a radio in perfect working order. And the most incredible aspect of this event
is that when the USAF rescued the parts of the “Lady Be Good” in 1960, the inhospitable desert had
kept them in such good condition that they could be used as spare parts.
Be sure that this type of disaster and preservation does not occur only in the desert. In fact, hundreds
of planes are submerged under the sea. A severe storm off the coast of Wales in early 2014 exposed the
remains of a USAAF Lockheed P-38 Lightning. The very force of the waters had dislodged the fuselage
from the seabed and dragged it up onto the beach. Despite having crashed in 1942, it remained in fairly
good condition, with parts almost intact and free of corrosion. New Guinea, Bahamas, Solomon Islands,
Corsica, the Aegean Sea... in their waters we can track many more interesting examples of these lost
aircraft.

merse yourself in the stories of these planes abandoned to their stunningly weathered fate.
